Declared loyalties and the loathsome rest
Boner recently dogged me for allegedly carpetbagging sports loyalties. Being bored on a flight this weekend I decided to take stock of the situation. I enjoy hearing why people root for the teams they do and maybe I shall write a book about it someday. In the meantime, here are the franchises I give a shat about one way or another and why:
Yea-
San Diego Chargers, Padres. Above all. Because it is home and the source of some of the earliest memories (pregnant mother with "Future Charger Fan" t-shirt). God help us if they ever leave town like they're always threatening.
Philly Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers. Because I live here now and wherever you live you get saturated with coverage so you might as well give a shit. Plus Philly Fan is amusing in his mean-spirited religious devotion.
Houston Astros, Rockets. Same as above, only I don't live there anymore, but the people are so good and decent and the town so maligned how can you not keep some love? The Rockets less so, but they've got the coolest logo and unis ever such that if I were to start a gang like in Michael Jackson's "Beat It" video we'd all dress in Rockets gear.
University of Arizona Basketball. The NBA generally sucks anyhow, so if it's college hoops, it might as well be Tucson. Plus they practically cancelled school during that one run in '97.
Notre Dame Football. Wop family, Catholic church, Irish priest. What do you expect.
Boston Red Sox. With a huge caveat and that's that once they lost their losing luster, they became a lot less loveable. Now it's just an endless pissing match with Steinbrenner.
Detroit Red Wings. If only for a little high school nostalgia.
Nay -
Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos.
New York Yankees.
L.A. Lakers.
Duke Basketball.
University of Miami Football.
Florida State Football.
Any and all things Florida for that matter.
Pittsburgh Steelers.
Atlanta Braves.
Arizona Diamondbacks.
If any of the two people who still read this blog would care to chime in...?

Do you still hold any allegiance to the BoSox after that traitor Damon went to the Yankees?
Just serves to prove that the BoSox, without the curse, are no better than the Yankees - spend high, win games, and lose in the playoffs...shit, at least the Astros keep their costs down and make it to the Series.
Nobody replied to this, and as I sit here, my roommates are playing their Madden Superbowl, plowing through cold Hamm's and Jack and Cokes.
So to ruminate on sports, let me provide you with my updated background.
Oui or Non?
First, the Oui
Astros, Rockets, Oilers (fuck Tennessee)
I have always loved the Astros, and there is no debate about that. I had a soft spot for the Phillies, with Von Hayes, Dickie Thon and of course, Mike Schmidt. The Blue Jays were also solid, as we were closer to Toronto than New York.
In football, after the Oilers moved, I moved allegiance to the Seahawks, the team furthest from the Bills, as I desparately despise that team so much. Lofton, Kelly, Reed, Thomas, Smith, Bennett, Tasker, Talley, Beebe, Kelso - these are all men on my "to kill" list.
As far as college allegiance goes, I've always been a sucker for Syracuse, and more broadly, the Big East, sans Miami, because they're scum for switching to our league, then switching to the ACC...
In college, it was all ECAC, with Harvard, Cornell, and the other schools that St. Lawrence always tried to emulate. Then again, we did make it to the hockey final four my freshman year - weird.
Now, the non
Yankees, any Cali Team (any sport), the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche (for moving the NorthStars and the Nordiques), anything remotely close to Buffalo, NY.
A new hatred for the Mets for the Beltran debacle, a new hatred for the BoSox because they got their pennant, the Cubs, because they share a division with the Astros, and any ChiTown wannabe White Sox fan who switched allegiance from their beloved Cubs - bullshit, absolute bullshit. To those South Siders that have always followed the White Sox, I mean you no ill will, but I have spoken to far too many ex-Cubs fans that rattle on about "blue collar tendencies" and the South Side...
I do, however, take issue with your evolving allegiance, Michael. I accepted your Astros fascination, but it really got my goat cheese when you became a Phillies fan straight out of the gates, just as the Astros fought for the wildcard against that very team. Unless you wear a Lindros Flyers jersey the next time I see you, expect some verbal abuse (which is the soup du jour with me).
Alas, now I am in the Northwest, a place where sports have been forgotten. The Blazers are terrible, there's only Mariners baseball, and hockey is a sound you make when you clear your throat. As far as the Seahawks, I've made my peace with my past devotion, and look forward to seeing them win the Super Bowl this year...
Cheers and Happy Holidays,
Null
